I must say that i love Tuesdays now, my IR class is absolutely awesome , i'm really exited and happy about this decision i took about getting back to University and beginning a totally new career, International Relations , every day I'm learning a lot of new things and also getting everything together of what i learned in the past .
Class began with a video (actually it was a TED Talk which by the way I love) about a Diplomat named Carne Ross , he began explaining why randomness became part of his life and how that took him to be a Diplomat .
He began explaining a little bit about his career and how he joined the British foreign service in 1989 , five thousand people apply and he succeed. He began working specifically in Great Britain and then he was moved to New York to became the UN council for the British delegation , he work basically with the middle east peace process and Iraq an his weapons of mass destruction which was his speciality . He was living in New York when the twin towers were crashed , since then he realized his diplomacy period had very hard and dramatic situations but at the same time he was living a good life there. In 2002 when his period came to an end he decided to take a sabbatical, during that time several things happen that he wasn't agree at all with , so Carne decided to resigned from the british services in 2004. At the beginning he was really worried about his decision and the consequences that might come. In March 2004 in Kosovo , there was a totally absence of the government , Anarchy was taking place , he saw all these people killed and how police was hurting everybody . That specific situation mark him and make him think how easy will be the end of some problems if somebody takes a grate responsibility and deal with it.
He felt very hand-tight ( in Kosovo is not allowed the diplomatic service or a foreign office to help) , the situation was getting things more complicated , by this moment that is how the idea of beginning being an independent diplomat came from , he founded a non-govermental organization and founded a diplomatic advisory group ( he called a "Freelance Diplomat" as well ).
Back to his randomness , he tells a story really captivating and unique, he meet this guy in NY , they began talking about their personal projects and Carne began to explain about this new NGO he and his wife was planting in New York at that time, so this man was surprised , he suggested that Ross must visit his company named WHAT IF ( an innovation company ) ... so one thing end to another and he ended having a desk in WAHT IF ... So, while he worked there he learned a lot about creativity and how innovation can change the spectrum of things if you visualized them from another perspective , he began to realize that there were different ways of get things done in diplomacy business when solving problems . Since then Carne inject a new thinking on how to get things done over independent diplomacy.
One of my favorite things he replays is : "the power of the things are rising , we all are living in a more complicated and fragmented world , if governments are less able to affect the problems that affect us in he world , then , that means , who is left to deal with? and who has to take greater responsibility to do with them? ... US !!! ...."
I summarize this video as : lets get things done ourselves , let's take that first step , that risk . Things can be solved in different ways if we use our creativity and how we can Innovate with extraordinary ways or ideas, let's think outside the box sometimes , lets learn over and over again from our failures ...
